What is a salwar kameez?

A salwar kameez is a three-piece outfit: a kameez (long tunic), a salwar or other bottom, and a dupatta (long scarf). It is worn across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and is also called a shalwar kameez, salwar suit or Punjabi suit. It is one of the most versatile South Asian outfits, simple enough for everyday wear and elegant enough for a wedding when embroidered.

Shop by style
  • Punjabi suits: colorful, embroidered suits with salwar or straight pants, a favorite for Punjabi and Sikh weddings, jaggo and festivals.
  • Sharara suits: a short kurta with wide, flared pants that flow like a skirt. Popular for mehendi, Eid and sangeet.
  • Gharara suits: similar to a sharara, but fitted to the knee and flared below it, gathered with a band at the knee.
  • Anarkali suits: floor-length, flared kurtas that fall like a gown, ideal for receptions and formal events.
  • Palazzo suits and pant suits: modern, comfortable sets with wide-leg or straight pants.
  • Straight suits and churidar suits: classic, streamlined silhouettes with fitted bottoms.

How to choose a salwar kameez for your occasion

Weddings and receptions: choose silk, velvet, organza or tissue with zari, sequin or mirror work. Anarkalis and shararas look more formal than straight suits. Planning for a Punjabi wedding? Read what to wear to a Punjabi wedding.

Mehendi and haldi: sharara and gharara sets in yellows, greens and pastels are easy to move in and photograph well.

Eid and festivals: an embroidered sharara, gharara or anarkali in georgette or organza is festive and comfortable for long days of visiting family.

Everyday and work: printed or lightly embroidered straight suits and palazzo sets in crepe or chinon.

Salwar kameez FAQs

Is a salwar kameez the same as a Punjabi suit?

Mostly, yes. "Punjabi suit" usually refers to a salwar kameez in the Punjabi style, often brightly colored with a shorter kameez and a gathered salwar. Salwar kameez is the broader term for any tunic, bottom and dupatta set.

What is the difference between a sharara and a gharara?

A sharara flares out from the waist like wide-leg pants. A gharara is fitted to the knee and then flares out, with a band or joint at the knee.

What is the difference between a salwar kameez and a Pakistani suit?

They are the same outfit. Pakistani suits are often cut with a longer kameez and made in lighter fabrics like lawn, chiffon or organza, and the term "shalwar kameez" is more common in Pakistan.

Does a salwar kameez come with a dupatta?

Yes. Each suit is sold as a complete set with the kameez, bottom and matching dupatta.

Can a non-South Asian guest wear a salwar kameez to a wedding?

Yes. It is comfortable, modest and a thoughtful choice for guests. Avoid all-red for weddings (it is traditionally the bride's color) and all-white unless the invitation asks for it. For Pakistani weddings, see our Pakistani wedding guest guide.

How long will my suit take to arrive?

Shipping time is shown on every product page, and customized pieces can take longer. If you have an event date, filter by shipping time and order early.
